Classcraft was implemented in Rachel Helmcamp's 4th grade Reading classroom. She had both of her classes (total of 44 students) participate in this activity and the students greatly enjoyed this experience!
Overall students had a high rate of succcess as they could go back and redo the game if they didn't score the amount of points they wanted to the first time. Additionally, students thought Classcraft was "Imaginative", "Exciting", "A real way to engage in minute mysteries", and "A great escape from the boring, everyday routine." Her students were excited to play it again and since playing it in class, have gone home to play at least one battle by themselves.
After implementing the various battles of Classcraft, Rachel gave her students a post-assessment over Inferencing using mysteries that were similar to the game. The average for the post-assessment was an 85% accuracy. After students finished the post-assessment, Rachel asked her students why they felt like they had a higher success rate after playing Classcraft and they said, "It finally clicked with us that that's what those mysteries did...allowed us to inference." They look forward to playing another battle again, and Rachel has been told they want battles set up for the summer time! Let the games begin!
